Now into my third term of evening classes with USW the experience remains the highlight of my week. I am pleased and gratified by the dedication to the course, the increasing quality of the writing and the level of constructive criticism drawn from the group under Ashley’s empowering coordination.

Incisive, witty, thought-provoking, straight-talking, and so much more. Ashley ticked all the boxes for me. Worth every penny, with a sharp critique of the Great American Novel to boot. Highly recommended for all budding novelists. And the best biscuits in town.

I have been attending Unthank workshops non-stop for around a year and a half. The group’s regular critical engagement with my work has played an important role in my development as a writer, as has the opportunity to read and discuss the writing of other participants.

I’ve attended a number of Unthank School courses and look forward hugely to each session. I always come away having learned something and the workshops definitely give focus and structure to my writing.

Tuesday nights are the main reason I write. Ashley’s advice is always spot on and the support of the group is invaluable.

Under Ashley’s guidance and with the help and support of a vibrant and entertaining group of fellow writers, I have learned so much. Through a process of peer review, the issues tackled have included plot development, characterisation and use of language all within lively sessions that are always welcoming, constructive and hugely enjoyable.

‘The workshops didn’t just give me feedback on my work – they gave me much-needed motivation! I started out with 2,000 words and a vague dream of one day writing my first novel. Just one year later I had a complete first draft and pages and pages of helpful notes that I’d jotted down from the advice from Ashley and my fellow workshoppers. I’m now in the perfect position to write my second draft and I’m starting to feel like a real novelist!’

Attending the Advanced Fiction Writing Workshop was a very important part of my development as a writer. Not only is Ashley a fantastic tutor, who gave me faith in my writing and helped me hone what talent I have, but I also had the pleasure of sharing the space with a very interesting and intelligent group of writers. The value of both listening to other’s work and receiving their praise/criticism cannot be underestimated, but it’s important that this takes place in the correct environment, one in which both are constructive. So it was, while attending a workshop at the Unthank School. It was so good I did it twice, but then again, so did most of the others on my course. I could not recommend both Ashley and the Unthank School of Writing, enough.

I attended four terms of the creative writing workshop and can’t praise it enough. It was a safe space to share work and the feedback I got from both the group and Ashley was invaluable to my writing. Ashley is a great facilitator and really skilled at helping you to understand what you are trying to do. He also suggests skills and methods that you can use to help you achieve your aims. The groups changed slightly from term to term but they were always supportive, positive and honest about each other’s work and the workshops were fun too.

“A safe space in which I have found my voice and the true meaning of my work from the support and encouragement of Ashley’s weekly classes. Thank you.”

Ashley is great at facilitating an environment where you learn as much from giving feedback to peers as you do from the feedback on your own work. It’s great to be around like-minded people and learn from others’ manuscripts at any stage of the process.

Ashley is patient, perceptive and intuitive. Working with him has been an absolute pleasure. He has a light touch but is also unafraid to be bold when necessary but always runs his classes with good humour and insight. I feel I have grown as a writer under his tutelage and hopefully will soon fulfil my ambition of finishing my first novel.
