The Online Writing Workshop is a superb course and terrific value in terms of the quality of the feedback and the course itself. Other courses do not offer this level of tutor involvement and input. Highly recommended!

The Online Fiction Workshop by Ashley Stokes stands out from the wide variety of courses available on the internet. As a returning customer, I very much appreciate the discussions on the VLE. They engage with the texts and focus on problems the individual writer struggles with. Ashley Stokes’ detailed and careful feedback has often made me aware of what I did not notice myself – a minor inconsistency, the pace that had better be slowed down, a plot point that needs shifting…
Add to this the feedback from fellow writers, whose commitment and suggestions have given me encouragement since I joined the workshop.
Highly recommended for writers who love writing.

The hours I spent on writing for this course and then discussing what I had written, were probably the most constructive and instructive few hours a week that I’ve spent on my writing. It was a pleasure to critically read the work of others every week and learn from that as well as from the detailed, advice I received for my own work from the tutor and my fellow students in an easy-going, warm and friendly environment.

Taking part in the online fiction workshop is always a hugely rewarding experience. The chance to connect with a community of writers and read a broad variety of work has definitely taught me a lot about writing and the critique offered every week is invaluable.
The online chats are often inspiring and take my writing off in directions I wouldn’t have thought of without the discussion. Writing can be an isolating experience but the workshops create that sense of kinship so often needed to motivate and tighten plotlines and character development.

I joined Ashley’s creative writing online fiction workshop in September 2015 and immediately started writing my first novel, Daughters of Hamilton Hall (2018). Every other week I had to submit 2000 words to the workshop for feedback from the other student writers and Ashley. I found this immensely helpful and motivating. After a couple of years of writing an average of 1000 words per week, I had my finished novel and self-published it (even though Ashley encouraged me to get an agent and go the traditional publishing route!).
I wouldn’t have missed the experience for anything. I learned so much in a supportive and safe environment, not only about my own ability as a writer but also about critically reading and evaluating other writers’ work.
Thoroughly recommend!

Ashley Stokes is a fantastic tutor who is professional and motivating. He is a writer, editor and publisher who has also taught on the UEA creative writing Masters course. He is an extraordinary writer who writes about extraordinary things, but he has never made me feel my writing is anything less than valid and important.
The system works well: Each fortnight we submit 2000 words of our current work (or something else if that didn’t happen that week). We get feedback from the group as well as written feedback and line edits from Ashley. Then we have a dedicated time each fortnight where we talk about that week’s submission or anything else we want help with. It feels like Ashley is truly committed to getting the best out of his students and every so often he says something completely illuminating that changes everything.
I would recommend this course to anyone needing motivation to start or continue with a writing project.
Thank you Ashley Stokes for helping me have such a productive year, I look forward to the next.
