Writing for Wellbeing

The purpose of this course is to bring the healing properties of writing into your daily life.

Next session runs 20th April to 1st June 2020

  • A 6-week course with a weekly live session. Each week we will: Share and discuss our own writing, uploaded ahead of time; read published work that helps us think about our own practice; use meditation, writing, and playing to build confidence and gain clarity over our own narratives.
  • Build a toolbox of exercises and practices. By the end of the course, you will have a collection of prompts to use and reuse.
  • Share and discuss in a safe space. Bring your personal life to the table or use the page as a middle ground — this is a judgement-free zone.
  • Meet like-minded people and become part of a community that sustains beyond the duration of the workshop.
  • Develop your writing project over a six-week online course. Hone your voice, learn about structure, edit and rework to find the truest forms for your ideas.
  • Get personalised feedback from an experienced tutor who gets to know your work and your voice.
  • Forms a pathway into other courses at the Unthank School, such as our Online Fiction Workshop and Short Story Workshop

How you'll learn

Whether you want to practice expressing yourself to friends and family, you’re working on a memoir and want to dig deep to tell the truth, or you would just like to spend some time each week in a safe space, this course will give you a routine of writing reflectively that should begin to impact how you feel.

Our whole approach is to recognise what you are trying to do with your writing and help you achieve it. We always keep in mind what stage you are at and customise feedback and assignments accordingly.


Who it's for

This online workshop is for writers of all experience levels. You may have never really written creatively before, but find yourself craving a regular reflective time dedicated to expressing your thoughts. You may be in a practice of writing everyday but would like to balance goal-setting with a more mindful, kinder routine.

About the tutor

Georgina Parfitt was born and raised near Wymondham, Norfolk, At 18, she moved to the US to attend Harvard University, where she studied creative writing under the mentorship of Amy Hempel, and won the David Rice Ecker, Charles Edmund Horman, and Edward Eager Memorial Fund prizes for writing. She received her MFA in Fiction from Boston University, where she went on to teach creative writing workshops, including Introduction to Creative Writing and Writing Fiction. She has published fiction and non-fiction in publications across the US and UK, including Litro, The Atlantic, Nat Brut., and Unthank’s own Unthology.  Her teaching philosophy favours the practical and the personal. Learning by writing, sharing pieces of truth, and being brave (we’re in it together).
